The Mendocino Coast

If you like secluded, quiet towns along the coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean, then Mendocino Coast in California is a nice place to spend a day or two. The drive to get there (northbound) is absolutely stunning along California Highway 1. Be careful though, the highway winds and curves right along the edge of the cliffs at times. And I'm talking high cliffs . . . it's much scarier on the way back (southbound) along the highway toward San Francisco. The town shuts down early so don't expect any real nightlife. Your best bet is to go there if you just want to relax and enjoy ocean views and breezes and leave the hustle and bustle of city life. Don't expect to do too much else here. Shopping in the small shops is available.  Perfect for a weekend getaway with your special love if you live in the region. Occasionally, they have special events planned for the city. If you do decide to head out there, keep in mind that sometimes Highway 1 is closed due to mudslides, etc. especially now that we are going through a very wet El Nino season. I'd recommend calling the California Highway Patrol about the driving and road conditions.  My visit was during the summer season and the evening walk by the coast was breathtaking. You might even see a whale migrating (although there are probably better locations for whale watchers).

Unfortunately, I only have one image scanned at this time, but it shows the city and the cliffs that surround it.  Below is a photograph of the coast along highway 1.
